The DFG announced a deal with many publishers on national electronic access to journal content.
The miserable e-journal situation in Aachen took a big turn for the better, because of the DFG decision to fund Germany-wide access to numerous journal archives, including many from Elsevier, Springer and Wiley. The journals can be accessed via the Regensburg portal. Most recent years are typically not covered, and here access will continue to vary wildly from school to school. But the accessibility of pre-2000 publications in engineering and science is now excellent.

Fortress is the new Fortran?
An article on the Sun web site describes Guy Steele's work on Fortress programming language. Steele worked on Java as well as on High-Performance Fortran; he freely admits that Java sucks for scientific computing, and sets about fixing the problem...
Update: the Fortress Language Specification 0.618 and slides and audio from a recent Sun talk are now online.
